It's time to see your dentist?



Dentistry can be expensive, especially when the dentist has to handle problems on an emergency basis. Many patients wait until something hurts them and often their pain is due to an infection that will necessitate a root canal or an extraction. Either way this scenario can easily become expensive since most teeth will need a post and/or core and a crown afterwards or in the case of an extraction, replacement teeth can cost more.

Many of our patients have dental insurance that covers a high percentage of their dental work, especially for treatment plans that are less than $3000.  Most plans run on a yearly basis, ending on December 31. Since our patients often have long term, staged treatment plans. This allows them to do some of their planned work each year, in a way that maximizes the amount their dental insurance will contribute. Often they have "large interim fillings" that will function like "dental duct tape" to keep their teeth from becoming decayed, until they are ready to restore the tooth with a crown. These interim fillings are used because they are less expensive than permanent fillings and inhibit decay formation, but they do not lessen the risk of a tooth fracture. These interim fillings only replace missing tooth structure, but do not protect remaining tooth structure from occlusal forces the way that full coverage (crowns and onlays)would. It is clearly better for our patients not to delay restoring these teeth and certainly not to wait until these teeth start hurting!

Since our patients who need crowns often prefer to have a pre-certification sent to the dental insurers, it is probably time to see their dentist soon to allow time for their insurer to process this document , which can take 4 weeks or more. If a patient has unused insurance benefits, clearly seeing their dentist now is a good idea, especially if they are due for a re-care appointment, since this will allow time this year to have any needed dental work to be submitted for the current calendar year.

Going for the Gold?

The cost of a penny weight of pure palladium is $130.6. It used to be that palladium was added instead of gold to the precious metals often used for pfms, but now laboratories are finding that palladium is no longer affordable. The lab that I am using has just changed the formulation of the metal it's using to one that has more gold than palladium. I really do not mind, but metals with more gold are softer and often easier for a dentist to accidentally polish off delicate margins. It is important when polishing "higher gold" formulations to exert less hand pressure when performing the final polishing of the crown's margins. Tongue Ties: What Parents Need to Know

For a long time, people just didn’t seem to know much about tongue ties. In the early years of my practice, few of my patients had ever heard of a tongue tie. When I pointed out that they or their children might be tongue tied, I was often the very first practitioner who’d mentioned it to them. When I told them that a tongue tie might actually be the root cause of their oral myofunctional issues, or even their sleep apnea , I’m sure that some of them thought I was crazy. But in the last few years, things have changed so much! Initially, there was a small increase in the number of patients who were contacting me specifically about tongue ties.
