Halitosis Stinks!

Are you constantly doing a “breath check?” Do you feel like fear of halitosis or, as it’s more commonly known, bad breath is taking a toll on your confidence? Dr. Colleran is a SLO County dentist who is experienced in preventing, diagnosing and treating bad breath.

How to Prevent Bad Breath

Many of our patients ask us how they can be proactive against bad breath. The good news is, there are a few minor adjustments you can make to your lifestyle to protect yourself from halitosis and those more serious conditions that can develop, like gum disease.

  • Take a look at your daily oral hygiene habits. Colleran cannot stress enough the importance of flossing, brushing, and rinsing with a bacteria killing mouth rinse.
  • Brush your tongue. Your toothbrush may not be reaching the back of your tongue, which is where those bad breath causing germs are most likely to thrive. Sometimes tongue scrapers may be in order. Just ask any of us at Dr. Colleran’s office for help.
  • Decrease tobacco and alcohol use. These products leave behind a large amount of sulfur compounds and generally stinky stuff that can increase the amount of bad breath causing germs in your mouth.
  • Watch your diet. No longer is it only your primary physician recommending you watch your diet but your SLO County Dentist too! It’s no secret that the foods we eat affect our breath. The regular suspects like onions, garlic and cruciferous vegetables (broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, brussel sprouts, etc.) which provide compounds to bacteria living in your mouth to produce volatile sulfur compounds (VSCs), the main component of bad breath.
  • Switch your toothbrush often. Dentists recommend switching your toothbrush every three months. However, if your bristles are starting to look worn, feel free to switch it as often as you need. If you’re looking for a dentist near me who sells Sonicare toothbrush heads, Dr. Colleran is just a phone call away.
  • Schedule regular hygiene visits with your dental hygienist. Regular hygiene visits will keep gum disease from developing and can help your dentist identify potential bad breath irritants early on.

How Will My SLO County Dentist Diagnose the Root Cause of my Bad Breath?

When you come into our office, Dr. Colleran and our team will conduct a thorough new patient interview so that they have a clear idea of your lifestyle, genetics and oral health. This information will help Dr. Colleran put your custom treatment plan together.

Is There a Dentist Near Me Who Treats Bad Breath?

Yes! Have you spent hours scouring the internet for a “dentist near me who treats bad breath?” Well, your search is over. Our office has a proven reputation identifying and treating halitosis.

If the underlying factors that have contributed to halitosis have advanced into periodontal disease, our office offers LANAP. LANAP is currently the only FDA approved laser treatment for the elimination of gum disease. That’s right! Elimination. Traditional periodontal disease treatments do not eliminate all of the gum disease causing (and in turn, bad breath causing) bacteria in the mouth and patients will often complain that their bad breath has returned.

When you leave our office after your LANAP procedure, you’ll leave knowing that with proper prevention habits in place, chronic bad breath will be a thing of the past.

Say “Hello” to a SLO County Dentist and “Goodbye” to Halitosis

There is no time like the present to begin taking care of your oral health. Now that your search for a dentist near me is over, let’s schedule your first appointment! Use the link at the top of this page or give us a call at (805) 250-0324.
