Get it while you can?


This Janis Joplin song is about an era eerily similar to our own own in the 60's. It expresses the sentiment that when things are getting crazy we should "get it while we can". OK, maybe she's not referring to dentistry, but .... still in NYC, this time maybe the calm before the storm. NYC has it lowest number of cases in months and most dental office have reopened for business.

We are current performing  cleanings and other ordinary dental procedures for our patients . If you have been thinking about whether to book an appointment with your dentist and you are in a county or state where the number new cases per day is at a low point, why not contact your dentist and enquire about whether they are seeing patients for regular treatment. If you are concerned about safety don't be afraid to ask about what new measures they are taking to protect patients and staff from Covid 19.  Ambient air management (air purifiers), use of additional PPE, additional time between appointment to allow for adequate disinfection, social distancing and  patient prescreening are some of the steps that our office has taken.

Our patients have been pleased with the steps we have taken to provide our services in a safe environment for all and are coming back to fix any problems that we discover during our examination. Their reason often has been that delaying their treatment may not the best idea since much of the country has experienced a surge in new Corona virus cases. If that Corona wave washes over NYC, we may experience a second lockdown and getting needed dental services may become more difficult to obtain.

I guess the point of this post is that, in spite of any and all the craziness that has been going on, now maybe a good time to see your dentist. Of course that may not be true if your location is experiencing a record spike for Covid 19 but in NYC things have "calmed down" considerably and this seems like a good time to visit your dentist.

Going for the Gold?

On the left is the older allow, on the right the new one that my lab has chosen to use The cost of a penny weight of pure gold is currently $79.53. The cost of a penny weight of pure palladium is $130.6. It used to be that palladium was added instead of gold to the precious metals often used for pfms, but now laboratories are finding that palladium is no longer affordable. The lab that I am using has just changed the formulation of the metal it's using to one that has more gold than palladium. I really do not mind, but metals with more gold are softer and often easier for a dentist to accidentally polish off delicate margins. It is important when polishing "higher gold" formulations to exert less hand pressure when performing the final polishing of the crown's margins. Tongue Ties: What Parents Need to Know

For a long time, people just didn’t seem to know much about tongue ties. In the early years of my practice, few of my patients had ever heard of a tongue tie. When I pointed out that they or their children might be tongue tied, I was often the very first practitioner who’d mentioned it to them. When I told them that a tongue tie might actually be the root cause of their oral myofunctional issues, or even their sleep apnea , I’m sure that some of them thought I was crazy. But in the last few years, things have changed so much! Initially, there was a small increase in the number of patients who were contacting me specifically about tongue ties. Dentists and orthodontists also began reaching out more frequently to discuss the application of myofunctional therapy exercises to tongue tie treatment.
