Do you take the new NY State mandated Child abuse course?

I took a course offered by the New York State Office of Children and Family Services last weekend. It was supposed to take two hrs to complete and was free.  It was supposed to take about two hours, but that doesn't incluede the time it took to register for the course and the course took closer to three hours to finish. The good news was that the questions that were asked could be answered incorrectly and the person taking the course wasn't required to go back and answer the questions again and again , until the correct answer was given. Instead, if you answered incorrectly , the correct answer was given along with the explanation for why it was the proper response.

According to the N.Y.State Ofice of Professions website:

Updated Mandated Reporter Training Requirements. Chapter 56 of the Laws of 2021 amended Social Services Law § 413 to require additional training to include protocols to reduce implicit bias in decision-making processes, strategies for identifying adverse childhood experiences, and guidelines to assist in recognizing signs of abuse or maltreatment while interacting virtually within the New York State Mandated Identification and Reporting of Child Abuse and Maltreatment/Neglect coursework. This law requires that mandated reporters, including those who have previously undergone the current training, complete the updated training curriculum by April 1, 2025. Information about approved training providers can be accessed on our website.

Although the topics covered are important, We dentists have had to take courses before on Child abuse reporting before and they were supposed to be a one time course requirement. I believe this new mandate was supposed to be a new, improved course that included recognizing implicit bias. This seems to me to be somewhat politically motivated, but it is the law in NY state so we must complete this or risk maintaining our New York State Dental license. There is a link that will allow you to print your certificate and a link that forwards the certificate to the office of professional licensing.

I liked that it was free and the answers were provided if you got the answer wrong. If you haven't yet completed an approved course, the completion of this course will fulfill your requirement.
